Hotel occupancy figures hit all-time high

Last updated 13 Dec, 2022

Adelaide recorded an all-time high for hotel occupancy in November following a blockbuster events season.

South Australian Tourism Commission data showed hotel room bookings were strongest during the inaugural Harvest Rock Festival, which celebrated good music, food, wine and brew.

On Saturday 19 November, there were 9,105 rooms booked, topping the previous record of 9,001 in September 2022.

It also drove occupancy to 91 per cent — the highest post-pandemic occupancy rate.

It came as the VALO Adelaide 500 attracted more than 258,000 to the supercars event over the weekend, up 25 per cent on the last time the event was held in 2020.

Premier, Peter Malinauskas said the occupancy figures were a clear demonstration of the economic value of the State Government’s approach to major events.

"By securing big events and bringing back the Adelaide 500, we are filling hotels, bars, restaurants and pubs, businesses which all suffered through the pandemic," the Premier said.

Last quarter, Tourism Sentiment Index Score figures showed Adelaide was ranked in the top 30 per cent in the world for its events and festivals.

Events, concerts and festivals were also listed as Adelaide’s most-loved assets followed by restaurants and dining and beaches.

Festivals, events and concerts in Adelaide generated 18 per cent more positive sentiment than half of the destinations around the world.

Minister for Tourism, Zoe Bettison said numbers so far showed an incredible start to the festival season.

"We’ve already hit the highest room nights occupied in Adelaide than ever before and reached a new post-pandemic occupancy record," Minister Bettison said.

"Our city tourism operators are set to reap the rewards of South Australia’s back-to-back major events.
