Restaurants dishing up authentic Italian food reminiscent of his European travels are just as important as runways for Paolo Sebastian Designer and founder, Paul Vasileff.
Then there are the businesses that keep his garments in a state fit for a princess, or those that give him a chance to unwind — supporting small businesses is high on Vasileff’s agenda.
Vasileff, who established Paolo Sebastian from his parents’ lounge room in 2007, was in fact a small business himself before he rose to global acclaim, so he understands the importance of getting behind local traders.
"When we first moved to Adelaide CBD back seven years ago we were just starting out … and we have been able to grow (the brand by) being based in the city,” Vasileff, who has dressed the likes of Katy Perry, Kim Kardashian and Heidi Klum, says.
“I think it's so important that the local community gets behind all these small businesses because without them they can't survive.
“These businesses have such genuine talent, culture and vibrancy to the city.”
Among the many places Vasileff enjoys visiting in the city is Osteria Oggi, on Pirie Street, where he can find a carbonara that tastes almost identical to what he experienced in Italy.
“Because our atelier is based in the city, I am in Adelaide everyday so it's a really great opportunity for me to visit a lot of the local bars and restaurants — and the food here is exciting,” Vasileff says.
“My favorite dish on the menu is carbonara, it is so amazing, because it is made the traditional way without cream. It reminds me of Italy
“The staff are incredibly kind, very warm and hospitable, giving off such a great vibe.”
Visible Changes, tucked away on Rundle Street, is where Vasileff heads for rest, relaxation and top-notch skin care.
He turned to Teresa and her team who offer skincare services, laser hair reduction, beauty treatments and spa packages.
“She has transformed my skin and, I'm so grateful to her and everyone there,” he says.
“They're just so attentive and they really, really care.”
“It has really given me the confidence to go out there, smile and be confident with my skin.”
Delicate couture gowns require meticulous dry cleaning, so Vasileff directs his clients to Tip Top Dry Cleaners on Hutt Street.
He says owner Paul and his entire team understand the level of care that goes into garment care.
"I really appreciated him taking us through his work room and showing us his step-by-step methods to ensure all garments are handled with care.
"They just really go that extra mile … to make sure everything is in pristine condition.”
Paolo Sebastian will be presenting at the ADL Fashion Week event The Art of Fashion on 8 October.
