Adelaide among the world's best for events and festivals, new statistics show

Last updated 15 May, 2023

Adelaide has continued its reign as one of the top cities for events with latest Tourism Sentiment Index (TSI) figures ranking it as fourth best globally.

The figures show Adelaide’s festivals, events and concerts were only behind Hobart, Valencia and San Antonio in the first quarter of 2023.

Adelaide Fringe, Adelaide Motorsport Festival, Adelaide Festival and Tasting Australia, all proudly supported by the Adelaide Economic Development Agency and City of Adelaide, have all been held since January 2023.

The Tourism Sentiment Index was compiled using data from 1.6 billion online posts, using artificial intelligence to extract sentiment from human expression.

Adelaide Economic Devlopment Agency Acting Managing Director Greg Ratsch said recent events and festivals had made the city “buzz”.

“These events and festivals, combined with extended trading in Rundle Mall between 5pm and 7pm on Saturdays over the Festival period, saw foot traffic up by 101 per cent in comparison to the same time last year,” Mr Ratsch said.

“Hoteliers report high occupancy rates.

“AEDA looks forward to more upcoming events such as DreamBig, Cabaret Festival and Illuminate Adelaide and we encourage locals and visitors alike to experience everything the city has to offer.”

Overall, Adelaide is the 52nd best destination in the world, with a restaurant and dining scene within the top 10 per cent globally.

TSI statistics from the last quarter of 2022 showed Adelaide was fifth best in the world for its pubs and breweries, only behind Portland, Houston, Brussels and San Diego.
