Celebrating working mums in the lead up to Mother's Day

Last updated 15 May, 2023

Working mothers Laura Santinon and Karli Stanton say the secret to successful business ownership is an important balance of both family and community.

Ms Santinon and Ms Stanton, who have a two and one-year-old respectively, own Jamu in the Adelaide Central Market and understand the pressures of balancing family and work life, and how they both contribute to a thriving business.

Ms Stanton says it has been the journey of parenthood that has enriched and changed the way she views both her work and the Market.

"I have always had a love for good food and having a child has cemented this,” Ms Stanton says.

“I love bringing my son into the markets, taking him shopping for fresh fruit and veg, and want for him to grow up loving the culture and community of the markets.”

Jamu has made waves in Adelaide's health food industry since its opening in September 2017, with an offering that includes cold pressed juices, smoothies and “not-so-naughty" vegan treats.

The duo met while working at the Adelaide Central Market and identified a gap for healthy food that was both accessible and delicious.

Ms Stanton says among the secrets to the business’ success is being able to share the workload with Ms Santinon so they can both have time with their families.

She says their children are their “biggest teachers”, further heightening customer service attributes they are already proud to have.

"I thought I knew a lot, but I am forever learning so much from my little one about patience, love, gratitude, resilience and so much more,” Ms Stanton says.
