Gather Round Locked in Until 2029: A Major Win for Adelaide's Visitor Economy

South Australia's hosting rights for AFL Gather Round have been secured through to 2029, following a new agreement between the State Government and the AFL that extends the event in Adelaide for a further three years.

The extension provides long-term certainty for businesses and reinforces Adelaide's position as one of Australia's leading major events destinations.

Since launching in 2023, Gather Round has quickly become a standout on the national sporting calendar, attracting more than one million attendees across its first three years, including over 132,000 interstate visitors travelling specifically for the event. This sustained visitation continues to drive demand across accommodation, hospitality, retail, and tourism.

According to analysis from the Adelaide Economic Development Agency, the 2026 event period delivered broadly stable spending outcomes and resilient visitor engagement, despite some variation in city-wide movement and precinct-level activity.

The impact of Gather Round extends well beyond stadium attendance. Hotel occupancy increases sharply during the week; restaurants and bars report strong trading; and key precincts such as the CBD and North Adelaide experience elevated foot traffic. For many operators, Gather Round has become a key trading period in the annual calendar.

The event also plays a significant role in city activation. Adelaide's city centre becomes a high-energy visitor hub with extended trading hours, increased street activity and a vibrant atmosphere that supports local businesses and the wider visitor experience.
