Your lunchbreak, sorted at… The Union Hotel

Last updated 25 Jan, 2023
The Union Hotel had its beginnings back in 1855 and, since then, has become one of Adelaide’s most iconic watering holes. From lunchtime pub grub to a gourmet specials list — your lunchbreak never tasted so good at the Waymouth Street venue.

A union of good food and good times

The Union Hotel director Miraj Dasai says his chefs are not afraid to push the boundaries and put a twist on pub favourites.

From pub classics like chicken and beef schnitzels, to burgers with haloumi and crumbed brown mushrooms — the haunt prides itself on a range of lunchtime options.

“We are one of the oldest gastropubs in the city,” Miraj, who took over the Waymouth Street pub about five months ago, says.

“Our menu is always different. We have the normal pub food, but our chef makes great specials every week.

“What is popular right now is our vegetarian pie with beetroot and a special crab burger — they are all on the specials board right now for lunch.”

Space is on the menu

Miraj says both workers and locals come into the pub for lunch, which offers good vibes and good food.

The venue is spacious but also has a vibrant and cosy beer garden to entice customers to come in for a meal and drink.

“We have a classic Cuban interior and people love it,” Miraj says.

“It is cosy and we have a fireplace which makes it very popular in wintertime.

“We have a pretty decent amount of space in the (beer) garden at the back, so we also are popular for after work drinks.”

Lunchtime favourites

As one of the city’s best known watering holes, typical pub meals are a customer favourite.

Schnitzels, burgers and salt and pepper squid continue are popular, but chefs also cater to dietary requirements.

“We have lots of popular dishes, but people tend to love our schnitzels,” Mr Miraj says.

“The chefs make the crumbs in-house, and people like that from what I have heard.”

All seasonal produce is fresh, and there are entrees, share plates, pizzas and mains all available to order.

There is also an extensive wine list and 18 taps at the main bar, which includes craft and local beers.

Takeaway is also available.
