Monet to Matisse: World-Class Art Arrives in Adelaide This Winter
This winter, Adelaide will welcome one of the world's most celebrated collections of European art as the Art Gallery of South Australia (AGSA) launches its Winter Art Series with Monet to Matisse: Defying Tradition, opening on 11 July 2026.
Backed by a $10 million investment from the State Government, AGSA's Winter Art Series will help position Adelaide as a premier winter arts and cultural destination, bringing major international exhibitions exclusively to local audiences through to 2029. The initiative is expected to attract interstate and international visitors while supporting hotels, restaurants, retailers and hospitality businesses across the CBD during the quieter winter months.
On loan from Ohio's Toledo Museum of Art, Monet to Matisse: Defying Tradition explores the evolution of 19th and 20th century European and American art through 57 works by artistic visionaries, including Vincent van Gogh, Claude Monet, Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso. The exhibition also features more than 35 works from AGSA's own collection, showcasing internationally renowned masterpieces alongside the gallery's own significant holdings.
Located in the heart of Adelaide's cultural precinct, the exhibition has been curated to encourage visitors to experience more of the city beyond the gallery. Increased visitation is expected to support nearby accommodation providers, boutique retailers and hospitality venues. At the same time, late-night events, artist talks and creative programs will further activate the CBD and encourage audiences to explore Adelaide's vibrant dining and nightlife.
Jason Smith, Director of the Art Gallery of South Australia, said the exhibition presents a rare opportunity for visitors to experience one of the most transformative periods in art history.
"Monet to Matisse will reveal one of the most transformative centuries in art history through a truly outstanding collection of treasured works from the Toledo Museum of Art. From Vincent van Gogh's luminous haystacks to Claude Monet's iconic water lilies, visitors will experience works by some of the world's most influential and inspiring artists. We are extending the visitor experience beyond the gallery through vibrant art-making activities, after-hours events and new opportunities for audiences to connect with these remarkable works of art and Adelaide's rich cultural life."
The Winter Art Series reinforces Adelaide's growing reputation as a destination for world-class arts and cultural experiences while contributing to a vibrant, year-round CBD. By attracting visitors during the winter season and encouraging them to explore local businesses before and after their gallery visit, the initiative supports the visitor economy. It showcases Adelaide as a city where culture, hospitality and city life come together.
Proudly supported by the Adelaide Economic Development Agency and the City of Adelaide through the Events and Festivals Sponsorship Program.
