What does a growing visitor economy mean for Adelaide?

Last updated 23 Sept, 2026

South Australia’s visitor economy reached $11.5 billion in expenditure in the year ending March 2026, with Adelaide and Greater Adelaide accounting for more than $5 billion of visitor spending.

But what does that spend mean for Adelaide?

It means demand for accommodation, restaurants, bars, retailers, attractions, events and experiences – and the businesses and people behind them. The latest Tourism SA data shows total visitor expenditure across South Australia increased 5 percent compared with the previous year. International visitors were a particularly strong contributor to that growth, with expenditure increasing 16 percent to $1.7 billion.

For Adelaide, the figures highlight the role the city plays within the state’s broader visitor economy. More than $5 billion visitor expenditure is generated by visitors to Adelaide and Greater Adelaide.

And that spending doesn’t happen in one place. A visitor coming to Adelaide might book accommodation in the CBD, have dinner at a local restaurant, attend an event, visit a cultural attraction and spend at retailers during the same trip.

Together, those individual decisions create economic activity across a much broader network of Adelaide businesses. It also means the value of attracting a visitor can extend beyond getting them here.

Encouraging visitors to stay longer, explore more and experience different parts of the city can create further opportunities for local businesses to benefit from visitor spending.

Adelaide’s events calendar is one part of that picture. Major events can bring interstate and international visitors into the city, while Adelaide’s hospitality, cultural experiences, attractions, retail and accommodation give them more reasons to spend time here.

The opportunity is in how those elements work together. A strong event calendar can support accommodation demand. More visitors can create additional activity for hospitality and retail businesses. A growing range of experiences can give people another reason to extend their stay or return.

That flow-on activity is what makes the visitor economy relevant beyond tourism itself. For Adelaide, growing the visitor economy can contribute to a broader economic development story – supporting local businesses, activating city precincts and generating demand across a range of industries.

The latest figures provide a useful measure of the scale of that opportunity.

South Australia’s visitor economy is now worth $11.5 billion annually. South Australia’s visitor economy is now worth $11.5 billion annually, with more than $5 billion of that expenditure generated by visitors to Adelaide and Greater Adelaide.

The opportunity for Adelaide is to continue building on that momentum – strengthening the experiences, events and city offers that encourage visitors to stay longer, explore more and contribute to local economic activity.
