Record Black Friday spending tipped for 2024

Last updated 29 Nov, 2024

City shoppers will open their wallets to the tune of almost $60 million this Black Friday weekend, with hundreds of thousands of people eager to cash in on the sales ahead of Christmas.

According to Adelaide Economic Development Agency (AEDA) figures, shoppers are set to spend approximately $59,470,756—approximately four per cent higher on 2023 numbers where $57,183,419 was spent.

In Rundle Mall, approximately $30 million will be spent between Friday, 29 November and Monday, 2 December 2024, with approximately 700,000 people tipped to visit the shopping strip.

Rundle Mall is the only retail precinct open for midnight trading.

AEDA Rundle Mall Executive Manager Andrew White says Black Friday has become the most anticipated shopping event of the year.

“It is going to be a big, big day because we have massive sales as well as trading right through to midnight on Friday,” Mr White says.

“It is now our biggest and busiest shopping day of the year.

“This where Christmas shopping officially kicks off—a number of our customers have told us they will be doing their Christmas shopping this weekend.”

Black Friday festivities will take over Rundle Mall, with live music, a concierge where bags can be dropped off to lighten shopping loads, as well as a valet service to take shoppers to their favourite shops.

The first 50 shoppers to use the bag drop each day will receive food and drink vouchers, while everyone who uses the concierge will go in the draw to win a $1,000 Rundle Mall voucher.

Mr White says customers have indicated that fashion, footwear, homewares, beauty and electronics are top of the shopping list.

“Early signs are for a strong turnout across the four days. We recognise that cost of living is increasing and know this Black Friday is more important than ever so shoppers can take full advantage of the big discounts and make their budgets go further,” he says.

In an AEDA survey of more than 2,000 Rundle Mall shoppers, more than half planned on spending more than $200 across the four-day sales event.

“Not only is Rundle Mall South Australia’s only shopping precinct open until midnight this Black Friday, but our premium, VIP-like shopping experience is unlike anything else,” Mr White says.

“With the biggest and best brands, and the return of our concierge and valet, it’s easier than ever to shop till you drop and snap up the bargains on Black Friday.”
