Renew Adelaide’s 300th Venture Signals Shift In Hindley Street Perception
The Adelaide Economic Development Agency (AEDA)’s strategic partner Renew Adelaide has announced its 300th venture: Household, a vibrant artist-run gallery and studio space on Hindley Street.
Located in Hindley Street’s iconic “blue building”, Household will support emerging and young artists, with the space housing a photography studio, retail space and quarterly artist-in-residence program, as well as hosting workshops, monthly exhibitions and artisan markets.
A not-for-profit initiative – and Australia’s only rent-free lease program of its kind – Renew Adelaide has been working to activate underutilised spaces since 2010.
Household is the initiative’s most recent long-term tenancy on Hindley Street, and its dynamic day-to-night offerings signal a change in direction for the strip predominantly known for its nightlife scene.
While Hindley Street’s vacancy rate has been high, facing the impact of recent closures and pressures on discretionary spending, this did not discourage Lili Harrison, the local artist who worked with Renew to bring the multidisciplinary arts space to life. Household’s offering is unique to the strip, representing the potential for Hindley Street to diversify its tenancies, boosting occupancy by attracting visitors with a wide range of interests, and encouraging visitation at all times of day.

Taren Hocking, President of the Adelaide West End Association, says the Association was proud to support Renew’s first two spaces on Hindley Street, and welcomes further new ideas and businesses to the strip.
“[Renew’s previous] small creative venues (before the time of small bars) demonstrated that small businesses run by imaginative people can have a genuine transformative effect on a precinct as a whole. The street is once more in need of creative new enterprises.”
Additional new openings such as Urban Climb, a bouldering gym across four refurbished cinemas, promise to attract a new cohort of adventurous visitors to the West End outside of traditional hours, while the continued success of Hindley Street Music Hall also fosters optimism. The venue has attracted music lovers of all ages and tastes since opening in 2022, including regular all-ages shows. Pre-show, many visitors also choose to dine at nearby restaurants such as Stem and APOTECA, increasing visitation in the early evening.

Renew Adelaide’s CEO Gianna Murphy reflects on the continued need for creative spaces in Adelaide’s West End:
"I’ve seen a really necessary evolution take place over my time at Renew. The organisation has matured with the community’s needs, with our focus now on creating a diverse mix of well-designed, long and short-term activations that promote economic benefit through social vibrancy.”

In addition to drawing new businesses and types of visitors to the street, a $15M Hindley Street Revitalisation Project is currently underway through the City of Adelaide. Looking to revive and refresh the street, the project will provide upgrades to street environment and space, including planting new trees, widening footpaths, installing new street furniture and creating space for additional outdoor dining to encourage active daytime businesses. Construction is expected to commence in early 2025.
