Tucker Street Provides a Home for Adelaide’s Most Vulnerable
A six‑storey development on Tucker Street will deliver 50 studio apartments for older women at risk of homelessness in Adelaide’s CBD as part of the South Australian Government’s Public Housing Improvement Program.
Women currently represent 60 per cent of specialist homelessness service clients in Adelaide, while more than 7,408 people experiencing homelessness in South Australia. With limited accommodation available for people at risk of homelessness in the city, developments like Tucker Street provide a secure and vital pathway to permanent housing.
Positioned in Adelaide’s East End, adjacent to Rymill Park / Murlawirrapurka, the development reflects a growing focus on creating accessible, inclusive city spaces that support vulnerable members of the community.
Located close to key city shopping precincts and high‑frequency public transport, including the free City Connector loop, residents will be well connected to essential services, employment opportunities and community life.
The Tucker Street project is a joint initiative between the South Australian Housing Trust and Mossop Group.
A leading South Australian commercial builder, Mossop Group has delivered a diverse portfolio of projects across the city, including tertiary education facilities and office developments, bringing extensive experience to this purpose‑led build.
The partnership reflects a shared commitment to strengthening South Australia’s public housing offering and demonstrates how thoughtful urban design can contribute to more inclusive city outcomes.
Each apartment has been designed with privacy, comfort and wellbeing in mind, featuring a private balcony, laundry, kitchen and bathroom. Five apartments have also been purpose‑built to support residents with accessibility needs.
Shared facilities at Tucker Street will include a large common area, courtyard with a community garden, bicycle storage and meeting spaces for visiting support services. Residents will also have access to a computer suite and free Wi‑Fi, supporting digital access for online appointments and essential services.
The site will be overseen by the South Australian Housing Trust and supported through a strong on‑site community wellbeing manager, who will work alongside residents to build positive relationships, encourage shared responsibility and connect tenants with services that support wellbeing and pathways to longer‑term housing.
Manager – Philanthropy and Engagement at Catherine House, Jaylee Cooper, says developments like Tucker Street play a vital role in supporting Adelaide’s most vulnerable community members.
