From Coffee to Sourdough: AEDA Helps the City’s Hospitality and Tourism Sector Thrive

Last updated 21 Jan, 2025

Almost 1,000 hospitality and tourism businesses are now open in across the City, new Adelaide Economic Development Agency data shows.

The figures, compiled by AEDA’s Data & Insights team, reveal citygoers have a choice of more than 935 places to explore.

This comes as new Australian Bureau of Statistics figures show 141 new hospitality ventures opened in South Australia between September and November last year, representing 28 per cent of new restaurants and cafes Australia-wide during that period.

In Short:

-  Almost 1000 hospitality and tourism businesses are now open in the City.

-  AEDA helps city businesses to grow through a range of initiative, connections and resources.

Johnny Come Lately partner Joseph Panuccio moved into the City last year, recently celebrating its one-year anniversary in Exchange Place.

He says the City was the perfect place to open a business to showcase his specialty coffee skills and house-baked sourdough breads.

“My wife Sonya and I could see that the number of people returning to work was on the increase, and that the City of Adelaide was supportive of activating new spaces and alley ways,” Mr Panuccio says.

“Exchange Place, where we now operate, has become a cool little hub for some new restaurants and eateries which we are proud to be a part of.”

He says the business, which celebrated its first anniversary on 8 January 2025, “loves being a part of the vibrant City community.

“The locals, who have pretty much become our friends, have embraced our offering and service style, with the demand increasing month on month,” Mr Panuccio says.

“We hope to be there for the long term and look forward to seeing the continued development in the area.”

Over 5 months, between 1 July and 30 November 2024, ATDW listings featured on ExperienceAdelaide.com.au saw significant engagement and reach.

Business and event listings generated 17,055 outbound clicks, attracting interest from 10,016 users. AEDA’s ongoing investment in the platform has led to a 100% increase in outbound clicks and a 101% increase in users, compared with figures from 2023.

AEDA’s current See for Yourself campaign is promoting businesses, including in the hospitality sector, to break the perception that Adelaide is boring and promote city spending.
